Wheel lift slings and recovery slings are both synthetic slings used on tow trucks — and that's roughly where the similarity ends. They're built differently, rated differently, and designed for completely different loading conditions. Using one where the other is called for is either a compliance problem, an equipment damage problem, or both.

Wheel Lift Slings — What They Are and What They Do

 

A wheel lift sling — also called a wheel lift strap or wheel strap — is a flat synthetic webbing sling designed specifically to cradle a vehicle's tire and wheel during a wheel lift tow. The sling loops under the tire and connects to the wheel lift crossbar or tow bar on each side, suspending the lifted end of the vehicle by its wheels.

The load path is straightforward: vehicle weight transfers from the axle through the wheel and tire, into the sling, through the sling connection points, and into the wheel lift mechanism. The sling is working in a basket configuration — both ends connected, load cradled in the middle — which is the highest-capacity hitch configuration for a given sling rating.

Construction: Flat polyester webbing, typically 4" wide, with reinforced eyes at each end. The flat profile distributes load across the full width of the tire contact area, reducing point pressure on the sidewall. Some configurations include a center guide or positioning sleeve to keep the sling centered under the tire during the tow.

WLL rating: Wheel lift slings are rated for the specific loading geometry of the wheel lift application — vertical and basket loads from below the tire. They are not rated for lateral pulls, forward or rearward tow forces, or dynamic shock loading from recovery operations.

Standard application: Front or rear wheel lift towing of passenger vehicles, light trucks, and SUVs. Repossession, impound, roadside assist, and short-haul towing where the vehicle rolls on two wheels while the other axle is lifted.


Recovery Slings — What They Are and What They Do

A recovery sling is a synthetic sling — flat web or round — designed for the highly variable load conditions of vehicle recovery: winching, lifting, pulling at angles, shock loading, and rigging to non-standard attachment points. Recovery slings are built for unpredictability in a way that wheel lift slings are not.

The key difference is dynamic loading tolerance. In a wheel lift tow, the load on the sling is relatively constant — the vehicle weight, distributed through the wheel and tire, applied gradually as the lift raises the axle. In a recovery, loads can spike suddenly: a stuck vehicle breaks free and the winch line jerks; a partially rolled vehicle shifts as it's being righted; a vehicle being extracted from a ditch hits an obstacle mid-pull. These dynamic events generate force spikes well above the static load, and a sling in a recovery application needs construction and ratings that account for them.

Construction: Recovery slings come in two primary forms:

  • Flat web recovery slings — single or multiple layers of polyester webbing with reinforced eyes. Similar in appearance to wheel lift slings but rated for a wider range of hitch configurations and load directions, including choker hitches and off-axis pulls.
  • Round slings — continuous loop of load-bearing polyester or nylon yarn in a protective jacket. More flexible and conforming than flat web, useful for rigging around irregular vehicle components, axle housings, and frame rails where a flat sling would create abrasion or concentrate load on an edge. WLL rating: Recovery slings carry WLL ratings for vertical, choker, and basket hitch configurations per ASME B30.9. The rating accounts for the varied load paths in recovery rigging — not just the static basket load of a wheel lift.

Standard applications: Off-road recovery, ditch extractions, vehicle rollover recovery, rigging for repositioning, anchor point building, rim pulls, and any situation where the sling needs to work at angles or absorb dynamic load spikes.

Why They're Not Interchangeable

This is the question operators ask most often — and the answer is no in both directions.

Using a wheel lift sling for recovery: Wheel lift slings are rated for static basket loads in a fixed geometry. They don't carry ASME B30.9 ratings for choker hitches or off-axis pulls. More importantly, they're not built to absorb the dynamic shock loads that occur in extraction and recovery operations. No synthetic sling is actually rated for shock loading — ASME B30.9 capacities are static ratings with a built-in design factor — but a recovery sling's construction, and nylon's ability to stretch and absorb energy, give it margin a wheel lift sling doesn't have. A wheel lift sling used as a recovery sling in a ditch extraction is being loaded in ways its construction and rating don't account for — that's how slings fail.

Using a recovery sling for wheel lift: Recovery slings — particularly round slings — don't have the flat profile that distributes load evenly across the tire contact area in a wheel lift application. A round sling used under a tire concentrates load on a narrow contact line at the bottom of the loop rather than spreading it across a 4" webbing surface. Under load, that concentration can damage the tire sidewall and creates an unstable, unpredictable load path through the sling. Flat web recovery slings are closer in geometry, but they're not positioned, sleeved, or sized for the wheel lift crossbar connection — fit and function are both off.

The applications are different enough that the right answer is to have both types on the truck and use the right one for the job.


Inspection and Retirement

Both sling types require pre-use inspection. The retirement criteria are similar but the inspection points differ slightly.

Wheel lift slings — inspect for:

  • Cuts, tears, or fraying anywhere on the webbing surface — particularly at the tire contact area where abrasion is highest
  • Webbing thinning or flattening at the eyes from repeated connection cycling
  • UV degradation — stiffness, fading, or brittleness in the webbing
  • Damage to the eye reinforcement or sleeve at the connection end
  • Any sling that has been run over, driven over, or caught in the wheel lift mechanism

Recovery slings — inspect for:

  • All of the above, plus:
  • For round slings: cuts or punctures in the jacket that expose core fibers — immediate retirement
  • Signs of shock load damage — a sling that was on a line that snapped or a pull that suddenly released may have internal damage with no obvious external sign
  • Distortion or permanent deformation of the sling shape
  • Label must be present and legible (ASME B30.9 compliance marking, WLL for all hitch configurations)

Both types: If the label is missing or unreadable, the sling has no verifiable WLL and comes off the truck.


Maintenance and Storage

Wheel lift slings: Rinse after contact with road salt, mud, or petroleum products. Inspect the eye reinforcement area regularly — this is the highest-wear point. Store hanging or coiled, not kinked under equipment.

Recovery slings: Same rinse and dry protocol. Round slings in particular should be dried fully before storage — the tubular jacket traps moisture. Store out of direct sunlight; UV is the primary long-term degradation factor for both polyester and nylon.

Keep both out of contact with petroleum products and strong solvents — and know the material difference: polyester resists acids but is weakened by alkalis and caustics, while nylon resists alkalis but is degraded by acids and loses roughly 10–15% of its strength when wet. Both types should be retired on condition, not on a fixed schedule — a well-maintained sling in light use can far outlast a heavily abused one.


Selecting the Right Sling for Your Operation

If you're running a wheel lift unit for daily towing, repossession, or impound: You need wheel lift slings sized for your lift and the vehicle weight range you work. Match the sling WLL to your lift's rated capacity and the vehicles you typically move.

If you're doing recovery work — off-road, ditch, rollover, extraction: You need recovery slings. Round slings in green (5,300 lb vertical / 10,600 lb basket) and yellow (8,400 lb vertical / 16,800 lb basket) cover most passenger vehicle and light-duty recovery jobs. Step up to tan (10,600 lb vertical) or red (13,200 lb vertical) for heavy recovery.

If you're running both wheel lift towing and recovery work: You need both types on the truck. They don't substitute for each other and the combined cost is not significant relative to the liability of using the wrong tool.
