How to Choose Carrier Tie Down Straps: The Complete Buyer's Guide

If you're buying carrier tie down straps and you already know your strap width, end fitting, WLL, and length, skip to the recommended configurations at the bottom. If you're not certain on any of those, read this first. A strap that's wrong for the application is one of three things: a compliance problem, a vehicle-damage problem, or money spent on gear that doesn't do what you need. None of those are cheaper than getting it right the first time.

This guide walks every decision point in order — how the FMCSA rules actually apply to vehicle transport, then strap type, width and WLL, end fitting, length, and kit versus individual purchasing. By the end you'll know exactly what to order.

First: How FMCSA Rules Actually Apply to Vehicle Transport

Most tie-down guides frame everything around the "50% rule" — the general cargo securement standard. That rule is real, but it is not the section that governs hauling vehicles. When you're securing a car, truck, or piece of equipment on a carrier, two commodity-specific rules apply, and the dividing line between them is 10,000 lb.

Light vehicles — 10,000 lb or less (49 CFR 393.128). Automobiles, light trucks, and vans must be restrained at both the front and rear to prevent lateral, forward, rearward, and vertical movement, using a minimum of two tiedowns. Straps that fit over or around the wheels have to provide restraint in the lateral, longitudinal, and vertical directions. That's the reg minimum — two. Every serious operator runs four, one at each wheel, and so should you. Four is faster to prove at a roadside inspection and gives you margin if one strap has to come off.

Heavy vehicles — over 10,000 lb (49 CFR 393.130). Anything heavier than 10,000 lb moves out from under the light-vehicle rule and into 393.130. Wheeled or tracked vehicles and equipment must be restrained against movement in all directions using a minimum of four tiedowns, affixed as close as practicable to the front and rear or to purpose-built mounting points. Accessory equipment (shovels, blades, booms) has to be fully lowered and secured, and articulated machines have to be locked against articulation in transit.

On top of the count, the aggregate rule applies (49 CFR 393.106). Whichever section governs, the combined working load limit of all your tiedowns must be at least 50% of the weight of the vehicle you're hauling. This is a floor, not a target — and it has to be recalculated any time a strap is damaged, derated, or removed. One cut strap can drop your aggregate WLL below the line and put you out of service on the spot.

The practical takeaway: the 10,000 lb line is where your gear needs to change. Below it, 2" straps and a four-strap setup cover you with room to spare. Above it, you're into four-tiedown minimums, heavier webbing or chain, and an aggregate WLL sized to the actual load.

Step 1: Identify Your Strap Type

Not every strap used on a carrier is the same category of product. Before width or WLL, the first question is what contact geometry the strap is built for.

Over-the-wheel straps. The standard configuration for rollback and flatbed carrier work. The strap routes over the tire — from a deck anchor, up and over the wheel, back down to a second anchor on the opposite side of the deck — pressing the vehicle down onto the deck. They work on virtually any vehicle because the tire is always available as an anchor point; you don't need factory tie-down loops or exposed frame. Fast to set up, and the default for passenger-vehicle rollback work.

Axle straps. These wrap around the axle housing instead of routing over the tire. Typically shorter, with a loop or basket at the axle end — no hook there, just webbing that wraps the housing and connects back to itself or to a fixed point on the lift. Axle straps are the standard configuration for the additional four straps in an 8-point setup, where the corner straps handle over-the-wheel securement and the axle straps add securement at the axle. Tire bonnets / basket straps. A basket-style strap that forms a pocket over the tire rather than routing across it, connecting to deck anchors at multiple points around the wheel. Less common on standard rollbacks, more common on dedicated auto-transport carriers where consistent setup across a full load matters more than raw speed.

Step 2: Select Your Strap Width and WLL

Width and WLL are linked — wider webbing and heavier hardware handle higher loads — but here's the part most guides get wrong: WLL belongs to the assembly, not the width. The rating is set by the weakest component, which is usually the ratchet or the hooks, not the webbing. That's why a 4" strap and a 3" strap often carry the same WLL.

[Confirm these against the labeled WLL of the specific straps BWS stocks before publishing — WLL is per the strap's tag, and hardware options change the number.]

For most rollback operators: 2" straps at 3,333 lb WLL cover everything in the passenger-vehicle and light-truck range. Four of them give you 13,332 lb of aggregate WLL — against the light-vehicle class (10,000 lb or less), the 50% rule only asks for 5,000 lb of aggregate. You're at roughly 2.7× the floor. That's the margin you want.

When to step up to 3": When you're regularly moving fully loaded 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups, large vans, or light commercial vehicles that push toward and past the 10,000 lb line into 393.130 territory. Four 3" straps at 5,400 lb WLL give you 21,600 lb of aggregate.

When to step up to 4": For medium and heavy-duty work where you want the wider webbing footprint to spread load and reduce surface pressure on the vehicle. Understand what you're buying: at 5,400 lb WLL, a 4" strap usually carries the same rating as a 3". The width buys you a gentler bearing surface, not more capacity. When four straps at 5,400 lb aren't enough aggregate WLL for the load, the answer is more tiedowns or transport chain — not just wider straps.

Step 3: Choose Your End Fitting

End-fitting selection determines what you can anchor to, how fast you set up, and how secure the connection is at both ends. It matters more than most operators give it credit for.

Snap hooks. A spring-loaded hook with a keeper that closes the throat. Fast on and off — open the keeper, drop it into a deck slot or tie-down loop, release. Best for factory tie-down loops (the recessed points under the bumper area on most modern vehicles), deck rail slots, and any clean fixed-point connection. The limitation: the keeper has to stay closed under load. A worn or bent keeper that doesn't spring back fully is a hook that can open under vibration, so inspect keepers regularly. Snap hooks also don't seat reliably on round surfaces like axle housings — the hook rotates and the keeper can disengage.

Chain ends. A short length of transport chain (typically 18"–24") terminating in a grab hook. Loop it around any structural member — axle, frame rail, custom bracket — and back-hook the grab hook to a chain link, or connect to a fixed anchor. Best for vehicles without factory loops, axle and frame connections, and any anchor point a snap hook can't seat on cleanly. More versatile than a snap hook in almost every irregular-geometry scenario. Trade-off: slower setup. On a high-volume operation running nothing but standard cars with factory loops, that time adds up. On a mixed fleet, the versatility is worth it.

Cluster hooks. A hook designed to engage several deck rail slots at once, spreading the truck-side load across multiple points. Built for dedicated auto-transport carriers with continuous-slot decks. Not the right choice for a general-purpose rollback.

Flat hooks / wire hooks (ratchet end). The deck-side hook at the ratchet body — a flat J-hook or wire hook sized for standard deck rail slots. This end is standardized across most configurations; it's the vehicle-side fitting that varies.

Step 4: Select Your Strap Length

Length determines your routing flexibility and how much excess webbing you're managing at the ratchet.

A strap that's too short can't reach the anchor on a longer-wheelbase vehicle without creative routing — which flattens the strap angle and cuts securement effectiveness. A strap that's too long leaves excess webbing you have to coil, secure, and keep off the deck. For most rollback operators doing passenger work, 27' is the right default — it handles everything from a Mini to a full-size crew cab with enough webbing to route at the proper angle without a mess of excess.

Step 5: Kit vs. Individual Straps

Buy a kit when you're setting up a new truck or replacing a full set. An 8-point carrier kit bundles the corner straps and axle straps as a matched set with matched hardware and a storage bag or reel, usually at a lower per-strap cost than assembling the equivalent from singles.

Buy individual straps when you're replacing one or two worn straps, need a specific configuration (length, width, end fitting) a kit doesn't offer, or you're adding supplemental straps to an existing 4-point setup.

One thing to verify in any "8-point kit": confirm it actually includes both the corner straps (longer, vehicle-end connection) and the axle straps (shorter, loop configuration). Some products marketed as 8-point kits are eight identical corner straps — which is not a true 8-point setup with dedicated axle straps.

Step 6: What to Check Before You Buy

Regardless of where you buy, verify these before the straps go on the truck:

WLL marking present and legible. Every tiedown's working load limit is established from the manufacturer's mark (49 CFR 393.108). An unmarked strap can't be used to determine DOT-compliant securement — so an unmarked strap is worthless to you at a roadside inspection no matter how strong it is. Don't buy unlabeled straps at any price.

Webbing construction. Tight, dense polyester weave indicates quality; loose, open weave wears faster and abrades sooner. You can judge this by eye.

Ratchet quality. The body should be heavy-gauge stamped or forged steel, not thin sheet metal that flexes under tension. The pawl should click firmly into the teeth and hold under hand pressure. The handle needs enough length for mechanical advantage without being awkward in tight spots.

Hook quality. Snap-hook keepers should spring back and close fully. Grab hooks should be sized to the chain grade. Any hook showing deformation, cracks, or a keeper that won't close is a pass.

Standards and source. Quality straps are built to WSTDA (Web Sling & Tie Down Association) standards and tested to the labeled WLL. Budget straps from unknown sources may carry a WLL number they can't actually meet. Buy from suppliers who stand behind what they sell.

Recommended Configurations by Operation Type

Standard rollback, passenger-vehicle focus: 4 × 2" × 27' ratchet straps, snap hooks, 3,333 lb WLL. Covers every vehicle in the light-vehicle class (10,000 lb or less) with wide compliance margin. Fast setup, simple inventory.

Rollback running a mixed fleet with trucks and commercial vehicles: 4 × 2" × 27' ratchet straps with chain ends, 3,333 lb WLL — or a hybrid, snap hooks on two and chain ends on two for maximum versatility. Add 2–4 × 3" straps for vehicles crossing the 10,000 lb line, where 393.130 and a four-tiedown minimum kick in.

Full 8-point setup for carriers and long-haul: Complete 8-point carrier kit with chain ends — 4 corner straps at 20'–27' and 4 axle straps at 6'–10', 3,333 lb WLL minimum. Higher-WLL kits available for heavier loads.

Medium and heavy-duty vehicle transport (over 10,000 lb): 3" or 4" straps at 5,400 lb WLL, chain-end configuration, minimum four tiedowns per 393.130. Size your aggregate WLL to the load using the 50% rule — and remember that beyond what four straps provide, you add tiedowns or move to transport chain rather than assuming a wider strap raises your rating.
